Free Graphic Design Tools for Churches

text reads 'everything you need' surrounded by icons representing free software

Every church can have good graphic design, no matter how small your budget. Lots of graphic design tools are free for charities and non-profits and below I’ve compiled some of the best!

All of these tools and resources were free at the time of writing this article, but do check all of the licenses to ensure they’re free for your church and for what you want to use them for.

Software

Canva Pro | Canva is a powerful browser-based design tool. They give non-profits a free license to access their pro features.

Affinity | Affinity is a suite of 3 pieces of pro-level design software. They also give non-profits a free licence.

Adobe Express | Adobe Express is another browser-based design tool.

Accessibility

Adobe Colour Contrast Analyzer | Ensure that your choice of colours are as accessible as possible. The Adobe Colour Contrast Analyzer lets you input your chosen colours and tells you whether they have an adequate colour contrast ratio.

Text on image contrast checker | Check that your choice of image and text colour have enough contrast to allow for legibility

Colour

Coolors | Coolors is a colour palette generator. It’s free and simple to use.

Canva Colour Wheel | An interactive colour wheel that lets you create colour palettes, based on colour theory.

Adobe Colour Wheel | Another free to use colour wheel which gives you more options and tools.

Photography

Dupe | Stock photography that doesn’t look like stock photography. You’ll find a selection of photos that look like they were taken on a phone.

Pexels | An enormous selection of stock photos and videos.

Burst | A stock photo library hosted by shopify.

Unsplash | Another huge library of stock photos.

Illustrations & Icons

Undraw | A wide range of simple illustrations.

Humaans | Customisable illustrations of people. Change the colours, poses, hairstyles and clothes!

Open Peeps | Another website with customisable illustrations of people. Similar to Humaaans, but a different style.

IoniconsA beautiful set of matching icons.

Templates

Greater Worth | That’s me! Yes, I have a selection of templates that are free for churches to use! All designed by a professional graphic designer.

Canva | Canva has a wide variety of templates for all kinds of church documents. Some are great, some could use some work but they’re a good starting point.

Training

Youtube | I have a YouTube channel devoted to teaching church volunteers and staff how to create beautiful designs for their church and grow their skills.

The Church Graphic Design Training Programme | If you’re looking for church specific graphic design training, I’d love to recommend my training course. In it I guide you through key graphic design principles and show you how to apply them all to a ministry context. The whole course isn’t free but you can watch lesson one for free here.
