Church Social Media Ideas for Outreach

In this article, you’ll find 8 church social media post ideas for outreach.
There are over 5 billion people on social media. That’s over half of the worlds population. And a huge percentage of them don’t know Jesus. These social media post ideas will help your church reach out to those 5 billion people.

1. Send this to someone
Write a sentence that starts with the phrase ‘Send this to someone…‘ For example,
‘Send this to someone to let them know you’ve prayed for them today.’
‘Send this to someone you’re thanking God for.’
‘Send this to someone who needs to hear it today’ and share a bible verse.
‘Send this to someone God loves.’

2. Verses in Recognisable Spots
If you want to use social media to reach out to your local community, try sharing bible verses in recognisable spots in your local area. These need to be visual posts such as videos or photos, and they can be an effective way of engaging with people who live close to you. Try a post it note on a park bench or a message drawn in the sand on your local beach. Be creative with these.

3. React to other content
Take a specific tweet, comment or video and share your church’s reaction to it. This could be a post that you really like and agree with, or it might be a post that you disagree with. Perhaps your pastor can record a video explaining their thoughts. Or you could write out a response. Take care with this post type not to fall into the trap of social media arguments. Model what it looks like to be respectful and loving even if you disagree with someone.

4. Prayer Response
These are posts responding to critical world events. Often, when people are faced with a tragedy, they don’t know how to respond. You could help by providing them with words that they could use or adapt to express how they feel to God. Sometimes when people don’t have an answer they turn to the church for answers. This is a post idea that could work in literally any format. Having text on a video background works well for short form video, but text on a carousel, in a story or as a thread will be equally as effective.

5. Who is welcome?
This involves a statement along the lines of ‘People who are welcome at our church’ followed by a really really long list of characteristics like the old, the young, the middle aged, the anxious, the weary, the lost etc. The key for this type of post is to make your list as ridiculously long as possible because you’re making the point that literally everyone is welcome. These posts work especially well with short form video or carousels.

6. Testimony
People connect with stories and sometimes hearing how God has worked in someone else’s life can be the thing that encourages you to look into things further. You could share people in your church’s stories of coming to faith or how God has been working in their life recently. This probably works best as a video, but carousels and threads can also be really effective formats for storytelling. If someone’s a bit nervous about being on camera, a text-based post might give them more confidence to share their story online. Or if you’ve got someone with a great story but is afraid to put their face or name out there, anonymous testimonies can still work really well.

7. Answer this question
These posts are amazing because they can provide you with a whole series of future posts. You’ll need to post a question and encourage people to answer, either publicly in comments or privately on stories or via direct message. Example questions could be, ‘if you could as God one thing, what would it be?’ or ‘What’s one thing that’s stopping you from going to a church?’ You’ll then use the answers people give in a future series of posts – for example a series of your pastor answering those questions people had or responding to those answers people gave. This is such an effective way to use social media because you’re not just communicating in one direction, you’re facilitating a conversation and building relationships. And that is really engaging.

8. Church invitation
The final church social media post idea for outreach is the ‘Church Invitaion’. Some people might need this clear invitation to feel like they really are welcome. Make it as personal as possible to your church and make it obvious when your services are so they know when and where to turn up.
